## User preferences

- **Goal:** A devotional series on 1 Peter for the congregation (evangelical, brethren background). Devotional depth with sound exposition; for others to read and be built up.
- **Audience:** A brethren assembly. Honour priesthood-of-all-believers, believer's baptism, gathered-church convictions. Charitable on disputed points (election, baptism mode/order, church government); no denominational wedge.
- **Through-line:** The priesthood of all believers (2:9) — identity shapes life. Follow the 12-section outline in [`outline.md`](./outline.md).
- **Pace:** Short daily lessons — one passage or concept at a time, completable in 20-30 minutes.
- **Framework:** Christian devotional, evangelical, reverent.
- **Translation:** ESV default; cite the reference in every scripture block.

## Backing claims to cite (verified 2026-06)

- **Authorship:** The apostle Peter (1:1), via Silvanus (Silas) as amanuensis (5:12). Universally accepted in the early church; some modern skeptical challenges, but Petrine authorship remains the standard evangelical position.
- **Date:** ~AD 62-64, before the Neronian persecution (likely before Peter's martyrdom in Rome, ~AD 64-67).
- **Provenance:** "Babylon" (5:13) almost certainly a symbolic reference to **Rome** (cf. Rev 17-18; Roman usage), not literal Mesopotamia. A minority hold literal Babylon or Jerusalem.
- **Recipients:** "Elect exiles of the Dispersion" in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, Bithynia (1:1) — largely Gentile believers (1:14, 18; 2:9-10, 25; 4:3-4) across northern Asia Minor.
- **Occasion:** Encourage believers facing social hostility and slander as Christians; call them to holy living, hopeful endurance, and humble witness under unjust suffering.
- **Themes:** living hope secured by the resurrection (1:3-5); holiness as God's people (1:13-16); the chosen race / royal priesthood / holy nation (2:9-10); sojourners and exiles (1:1, 17; 2:11); submission in the order God has placed (2:13-3:7); suffering after the pattern of Christ (2:18-25; 3:13-22; 4:12-19); shepherd the flock (5:1-4); humility and casting anxiety (5:5-7); watchfulness against the devil (5:8-9).
- **Priesthood thread (the series through-line):** God's people are a spiritual house and holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices (2:5), a chosen race / royal priesthood / holy nation (2:9). This frames identity (chs 1-2), relationships and witness (chs 2-3), endurance in suffering (chs 3-4), and humble service in the community (ch 5).
